Fall Projects

This fall the maintenance team has been working very hard to improve all surfaces of the golf course, which in turn will allow us to have great conditions coming out of winter. This includes seeding, sodding, applying orgro (compost) and fertilizing.

Greens
Over the fall months we have been seeding, sodding and plugging areas that weakened from summer stress. On the greens, we try to do as little sodding as possible because the following year it requires extra attention due to the lack of root structure. Although using plugs is more time consuming and only fixes a small surface area, it already has a 3-4" root system in place. Once the plug is set in the ground it doesn't require any extra attention like sod does. Any of the areas that are still thin coming out of winter we will plug as soon as the weather breaks in March or April.

Tees
The tees required some sod work on the surface of the tee, as well as around the tee boxes. A lot of what died over the summer was the Bentgrass that had crept into the roughs. Bentgrass does not fare well in the heat being mowed at rough height, it was produced to be mowed less than one inch. The majority of the areas around the tees that died have been stripped and sodded with Tall Fescue.

Fairways
The fairways were verti-cut and seeded where we had large areas of turf loss, with the worst areas were sodded. This winter we are installing quick coupler connections close to specific areas that require more water. This will allow us to connect a hose to hand water more sufficiently.

Roughs

In the roughs, we verti-cut and seeded or sodded all thin areas from summer stress and cart traffic. We only sodded the spots that were compacted and had no grass left from cart ware. We also applied Orgro (compost) to the green surrounds and areas that were seeded. This will help recovery as well as accelerate plant activity coming out of the winter months. The Orgro helps keep the plant insulated while it is cold.

We appreciate your understanding while these projects have been taking place. Please help maintain your course by fixing ball marks and filling your divots!  Please do your best not to drive carts through newly seeded or sodded areas! Thank you and Happy Holidays from the maintenance staff.
